WHOIS and RDAP

This tool uses RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol. RDAP is the modern replacement for WHOIS. It returns structured data over HTTPS from the registry responsible for each domain, IP range or AS number.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I see the owner’s name or email?

Most registries hide personal details for privacy. You will usually see the registrar and an abuse contact, but not the individual registrant.

What is the abuse contact for?

It is the address to report spam, phishing or attacks coming from that domain or IP range. For IP ranges it usually belongs to the network operator.

Why does a country-code domain return nothing?

Some country-code registries do not publish RDAP data yet. Check the registry’s own website for those.

What is an AS number?

An autonomous system number identifies a network that routes its own traffic on the internet using BGP, such as an ISP, cloud provider or large company.
